February is when we celebrate Valentine’s Day and Black History Month in The United States. This was initially the week around the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. It was later to be celebrated for the entire month. There were a number of Christian martyrs named Valentine, although it cannot be certain they were affiliated with romantic love. We do know that these martyrs found a cause in their love for Christ, that they were willing to die for. Martin Luther King was credited with saying, “A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.”
From the annals of history we know that Abra-ham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. both believed that God’s heart was for all people. They obtained this belief from the Word of God and their faith in Him. With statements like, "We must keep God in the forefront. Let us be Christian in all our actions” -Martin Luther king Jr., and “My concern is not whether God is on our side. My great concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right." -Abraham Lincoln, they were lead by their faith to stand for those who couldn’t stand for themselves.
We can take the time this month, to ask God how he might have us affect those around us, and stand for righteousness where he has placed us. May our love for God and His word lead us to a life of serving Him by serving others created in His image. We have the greatest message to share with the world, "For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”, John 3:16.
What wonderful news! Take the time to share that wonderful news with someone this month!

We are entering January, the first month of the new year. Many people use this time of year to try to stop old, bad habits or start new, good ones.
This makes me think of what happens for those who have trusted in Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” We are given new life when we trust in Christ. The old is not only gone, but we are made new! This is what we receive in Christ. We see in the Old Testament book of Lamentations, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness”, Lamentations 3:22-23.

Hebrews tells us that we have access to God by a “new and living way” through Christ. We have new opportunity every day to live out of the new life in Christ we have been given. We know that God is “making all things new”. This is available to us not just every year, but every day.

Malcolm Smith said this concerning our new life in Christ, “Christianity is not a formula, but the Person of Jesus Himself. Never think that Christianity is a matter of adjusting behavior, but rather, of letting Christ live through us in His strength and power.”

May this be a year in which we live out of this new life in Christ every day!

Love in Christ,

Eric

This year Christmas is on a Sunday; ironically, some churches are choosing not to meet!

I once read a story about a mother running furiously from store to store on Christmas Eve - trying to get those last minutes gifts. Suddenly she realised that she had lost track of her three-year-old son. In a panic, she retraced her steps and found him standing with his little nose pressed flatly against a frosty window. He was gazing at a manger scene. When he heard his mother call his name, her turned and shouted in innocent glee, "Look Mommy! It's JESUS! Baby Jesus in the hay!"

The harried mom grabbed his arm and jerked him away, snapping, "We don't have time for all that! Can't you see Mommy is trying to get ready for Christmas!?!"

What a blessing to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Sunday! Let us not forget the reason for the season as we celebrate his birth.
